The BoF 2026 Pinhole Challenge

A good start to this year’s #pinhole Challenge #believeinfilm

Following on from the success of the 2025 Holga Challenge, Andy, John and I have embarked on a new monthly challenge for 2026. The BoF 2026 Monthly Pinhole Challenge. At least one roll of film through a pinhole camera each month. The film stock is open as is the choice of camera; I hope to use all of my cameras at some stage of the Challenge. We are also not restricted to a single roll in a month.

We do have some loose themes for each month which I’ve listed below and from the images taken that month we will each select one to represent the month’s theme. Whenever we remember we also print the image and send it to the other two members as a postcard.

I opened my account on the 4th with a roll of Ilford HP5+ in the diminutive ONDU 6×6 Rise. The weather wasn’t particularly wintery so I knew I’d not be capturing “the” image for January but I was keen to start exercising my pinhole muscles as soon as possible. I ended up in a fast-food restaurant for breakfast where a side order of twelve pinhole images was the star of the show.

Bottom pinhole vs Middle pinhole

The unique feature of the ONDU, and the reason I bought it, is that it has three pinholes stacked one above the other. These give the ability for creative double/triple exposures but the main purpose is to control where the “horizon” sits much like a shift function. The bottom pinhole shifts the “horizon” upwards capturing more foreground whilst the top pinhole does the opposite. The picture above shows the difference between bottom and middle. All the preceding images were made with the top pinhole and indeed I typically use the top pinhole far more than the other two combined.

I finished the roll with a couple of images made through the window.
I’m not always this diligent with my note taking … but it is early in the new year!

For the technically inclined I developed this roll for five minutes in Bellini Euro HC at 20°c and a dilution of 1+31 (b).

So, there you have it. The first roll for this year’s Challenge and a very satisfying one it was to be sure. There’s currently a roll of Lomography 800 colour negative film in the ONDU … onwards!

2025 and all that

So, another year dawns … #believeinfilm

At the start of 2025 I was pondering my likely photographic objectives for the year. In summary I came up with …

  1. A small typology project featuring bus stops inspired by the Bechers
  2. A new physical zine – of square images
  3. An exploration of X-Ray film for pictorial landscapes

Number one is well underway and is turning into an ongoing project. I’m very happy to slowly add to this over this year but am thinking about pulling together an initial zine by the end of 2026. However, I can see this idea expanding to include other subjects and becoming a long term project.

I’ve already added doors and road signs to my original bus stop typology project

On the zine front there’s been plenty of activity this year not least my involvement with the Photozine Collective and I’ve documented my progress over the year in various blog posts. I’m currently working on a joint zine celebrating the BoFs Holga Challenge.

I’ve already produced my own Holga zine

As for number three … well, let’s just say I didn’t really get to use the large format cameras that much in 2025 let alone shoot X-Ray film. One for another day I think.

2025 provided plenty of challenges domestically, personally and photographically. It’s a year I was glad to see the back of so I’m not going to do a retrospective look over last year but am simply looking forward to 2026.

Plans for this year are still being formulated but I will be doing two Challenges. The BoF 2026 Pinhole Challenge and the more global Frugal Film Project. I plan to use the Holga WPC wide pinhole camera for the FFP so there will be some crossover between the two challenges.

One other thing that you can be sure of, I will be sharing my experiences (good and bad) on here. My next post is likely to feature the first roll of the BoF pinhole challenge and there is also a new camera to spotlight once it arrives with me here in Elland; more on that soon I hope.

All the best for the new year – here’s to a happy, healthy and creative 2026!
